Grants to Northern Virginia nonprofit organizations to benefit local communities in the areas of children and youth, education, poverty relief, health, aging, and mental health. Eligible communities include Fairfax, Arlington, Prince William, and Loudoun Counties, as well as the Cities of Fairfax, Alexandria, Manassas, Falls Church, and Manassas Park.

Grant requests for capacity building, program, or general support purposes will be considered. Funding may be used to support, expand, or enhance existing programs or to start new programs.

The Community Foundation establishes priority funding areas within each fund. For 2018 the Community Foundation will consider applications in the following categories. Applications that do not fall into these categories will not be considered.

Child and Youth Development:

Goal: To help children and youth to thrive

Positive youth development organizations or programs that support and provide opportunities to children and youth (age birth - 21) who may be at risk due to poverty (defined as up to 200% of the federal poverty level.)

Proposals in the following areas will be considered:
-Afterschool/Summer Activities
-Academic Achievement

Education:

Goal: To increase the number of children and adults who are prepared to enter a competitive workforce in the 21st century.

Organizations that support and provide early childhood programs, English language proficiency programs for adults and/or children, or job training/skills based education.

Proposals in the following areas will be considered:
-Early Childhood Education
-English Language Proficiency for Adults and Children
-Workforce Development/Skills-based Education

Health, Mental Health and Aging:

Goal: To nurture the health of all members of the Northern Virginia community.

Though this Fund will continue to support organizations or programs that improve access to mental health care for those who are un- or under-insured and support services for people with disabilities in future years, the 2018 focus will focus on the following area only:
-Organizations or programs that help the older population age in place and that support older adults who are low income or vulnerable.

Applications that do not fall into this category will not be considered.

Poverty Relief:

Goal: To relieve the suffering caused by poverty in Northern Virginia

Organizations or programs that provide assistance to people affected by poverty, including shelter, eviction/foreclosure prevention and other emergency assistance. Proposals in the following areas will be considered:
-Housing/Shelter
-Eviction/Foreclosure Assistance
-Other non-food related Emergency Assistance

For FY 2018, the Community Foundation will be working in partnership with and has made a grant to the Capital Area Food Bank to support food programs in the Norther Virginia region. Therefore, the Foundation will not be supporting additional food programs in this grant cycle.

Number of Grants:

The Community Foundation intends to make two grants in the Health, Mental Health and Aging category.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The maximum grant is $10,000, except for organizations applying for the 2018 Health, Mental Health and Aging grants.

Health, Mental Health and Aging grants will be $30,000 ($15,000/year for two years).

Term of Contract:

Health, Mental Health and Aging grants will span two years.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Organizations providing services in Northern Virginia (defined as the areas within Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William Counties and the Cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park) can apply for funding.

Applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations providing charitable or educational services.

Local, state and federal government entities are not eligible to apply.

Organizations are limited to one application per grant cycle. Multiple applications will not be considered.

Applications for capital improvements, endowments, or scholarship awards will not be considered.
