Grants to USA, Canada, and International individual scholars whose research requires the use of specific collections and materials found in the funding source's library, located in California. Funding is intended to provide partial support toward the costs of travel, lodging, and living expenses.

Getty Library Research Grants provide partial, short-term support for researchers requiring the use of specific collections housed in the Getty Research Institute (GRI).

In addition to the open call for applications, a number of focused grants will be awarded as described below:

Specialized topics:

  • Research on intersections between art and science
  • Research on connections between visual art forms and music
  • Research considering the visual culture of food, including culinary history, and the preparation and presentation of food, utilizing the Anne Willan and Mark Cherniavsky Gastronomy Collection of rare and contemporary books
  • Research that utilizes the Conservation Collection of specialized research materials related to the preservation and conservation of material cultural heritage

Special opportunities for advanced undergraduates:

Opportunities specifically for advanced undergraduates majoring in art history, architectural history, or studio art, to conduct research in the GRI's special collections and library.

Estimated Size of Grant:

In general, grants are awarded as follows depending upon the distance traveled:

Within California (must be more than 80 miles away from GRI): $1,000
North America, including Canada and Mexico: $2,500
International outside of North America: $4,000

Term of Contract:

The research period may range from several days to a maximum of three months.

Eligibility
Library Research Grants are intended for researchers of all nationalities and at any level, unless otherwise specified in the grant description, who demonstrate a compelling need to use materials housed in the Research Library, and whose place of residence is more than eighty miles from the Getty Center. Projects must relate to specific items in the library collection.

Housing is not provided.

Complete application materials are now accepted through an online application process only. The next deadline to submit application materials (including 2 letters of recommendation) for these grants will be October 15, 2019.

Applicants are notified of the Research Institute's decision approximately two months following the deadline.
