Grant Description
Grants and fellowships to USA, Canada, and International researchers at nonprofit organizations and institutions for research that expands knowledge of glaucoma and addresses prevention and treatment. Funding is intended to help support studies that spearhead new research that could lead to new treatments and ways of managing risk factors. Preference is made for exciting pilot projects that would not, at their present stage, be competitive for large government or industry awards.

Standard Awards: The standard award provides significant funding for researchers who have already generated some amount of preliminary data, but are often required to demonstrate additional, significant progress before they can apply to governmental or industrial funding agencies. Award Amount: $200,000

Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards: Postdoctoral fellowship awards are intended for young researchers in their final stages of mentored training. This fellowship is available to researchers within four years of degree conferral or end of residency or fellowship. Award Amount: $150,000

Additional Eligibility Criteria
BrightFocus will fund grants for research at non-profit organizations or institutions only.

Postdoctoral Fellowships are available to junior and senior postdoctoral fellows. Applicants with pending appointments are eligible to apply, but the appointment must be finalized by the start of the award. The proposal should be initiated by the postdoctoral fellow and not the supervisor.

Standard Awards: Traditionally, in order to be eligible for grant funding from the BrightFocus’ National Glaucoma Research (NGR) Standard Award Program, the Principal Investigator (P.I.) must have held an academic rank equivalent or higher than Assistant Professor.

In recent years, many outstanding junior faculty have taken non-tenure-track positions that in earlier years might have been developed as tenure-track positions. Though BrightFocus continues to encourage innovative proposals from all career stages, BrightFocus’ guidelines have evolved with the field to extend eligibility to non-tenure-track applicants as well. Non-tenure-track positions are welcome to apply for funding if they are appropriately trained to lead an independent research study, and are permitted by their organizations to manage the grant and supervise any key personnel.

For foreign institutions: Each Grantee Institution must submit evidence of its tax-exempt status to BrightFocus prior to the distribution of any Grant, including but not limited to, a determination of tax-exempt or nonprofit status from their home country of origin.

Grants may not be used for overhead, capital expenditures, administrative costs, or other peripheral costs, except where BrightFocus, in its discretion, may make an exception for costs associated with the publication of the results of the BrightFocus sponsored research in academic journals, or for costs associated with participation in academic conferences.
