Grant Description
Grants to USA, Canada, and International academic investigators for studies on suicide and suicide prevention. Some applicants must submit a letter of inquiry prior to submitting a full application. Priority will be given to proposals that address diversity and the evaluation of technological tools for suicide prevention. Additionally, the funding source has a strong interest in research related to survivors of suicide loss.

Innovation grants are offered in six categories:

  • Linked Standard Research Innovation Grants: Grants awarded to investigators at any level performing research involving two or more unique sites with each site contributing unique expertise, as well as data collection.
  • Distinguished Investigator Innovation Grants: Grants awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publications.
  • Standard Research Innovation Grants: Grants awarded to individual investigators at any level.
  • Early Career Researcher Innovation Grants: Grants awarded to investigators at or below the level of assistant professor. These grants must allocate $14,000 ($7,000 per year) of their award for an established researcher to mentor the Early Career Researcher. AFSP is available to assist you in identifying a suitable mentor.
  • Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Innovation Grants: Grants awarded to investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within the preceding six years and have had no more than three years of fellowship support.
  • Pilot Innovation Grants: Awarded to investigators at any level, these grants provide seed funding for new projects that have the potential to lead to larger investigations. These grants typically entail feasibility studies rather than hypothesis-driven research. Examples include manual development and new biomarker development.

AFSP suicide research grants program priority areas for 2020–2023:

  • Diversity: Suicide prevention research related to underrepresented communities, health, and mental health disparities and inequities, as well as researchers from underrepresented backgrounds proposing research focused on understanding and preventing suicide.
  • Evaluation of technological tools for suicide prevention: The application of implementation science methodology to evaluate technological tools available in order to expand access and overcome barriers for suicide prevention.
  • Survivors of Suicide Loss: Research related to survivors of suicide loss, understanding the impact of suicide loss and its after-effects, and the process of healing.

Additional Eligibility Criteria
AFSP research grants and fellowships are awarded to individuals affiliated with not-for-profit research institutions or organizations in the U.S. and abroad. Grant applications are not accepted from for-profit organizations, or from federal or state government agencies; applications from the Veterans Administration and NIH/NIMH are eligible. Applications from both private and public colleges and universities are eligible as long as the institution is not-for-profit. Check with your institution’s financial department if you are not certain about the status of your institution. Grant payments are made to the grantee’s institution for the individual investigator.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowships are awarded to individuals who will be receiving training and conducting research at universities and other training institutions in the U.S. and abroad. Fellowship applicants must have completed all requirements for a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree prior to the start date of the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship.
