Grants of up to $3,000, grants of up to $25,000, and grants of up to $85,000 to Pennsylvania IHEs, nonprofits, schools, businesses, and conservation districts for formal and informal educational programs about the environment. Funding is intended for programs that address climate change, water, and environmental justice on a local or regional level. Eligible uses of funds include projects ranging from creative, hands-on lessons for students, teacher training programs, and outdoor learning resources to conservation education for adults.

Environmental Education Grant Program Priorities:

  • Climate Change: Education projects to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and negative impacts of climate change including floods, changes to groundwater, pests, disease, agricultural disruptions, and potential threats to human health.
  • Water: Education programs promoting effective ways to reduce non-point source and source water pollution to improve water quality.
  • Environmental Justice: Education programs designed to empower and engage residents and officials of communities located in Environmental Justice areas, (as defined by the U.S. Census), develop meaningful solutions that address local environmental issues and public health concerns.

Two types of awards are available for projects addressing the Environmental Education Grants Program Priorities:

  • General Grants may be awarded for implementation of large scale regional or statewide environmental education projects or for non-formal projects engaging youth and teachers at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Mini Grants may be awarded for local (school, county, municipality, or other defined area) environmental education projects.

Estimated Size of Grant:

- General Grants may be awarded in amounts ranging from $3,001-$20,000 (Level I) or in amounts ranging from $20,001-$85,000 (Level II).

- Mini-Grants, of up to $3,000.

Term of Contract:

Awarded projects may begin on or before July 1, 2021 and must end by June 30, 2022.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible Applicants:
- Public schools and school districts (K-12) (including Intermediate Units and Charter Schools)
- Incorporated private schools (under limited circumstances, private religious schools may be exempted from the incorporation requirement)
- Incorporated conservation and education organizations and institutions
- Universities and colleges
- County conservation districts
- Incorporated nonprofit organizations
- Businesses (must be registered to conduct business in Pennsylvania)

Ineligible Applicants: Entities, including municipalities, that do not appear on the Eligible Applicants listing cannot receive 2021 Environmental Education Program funds. Ineligible applicants are encouraged to partner with an eligible applicant to deliver environmental education programs.

Expenses incurred outside of the Project Time period are ineligible for grant funds.

A 2021 EE Grants Program Webinar is slated for October 14.

Pre-Application Information:

- The 2021 EE Grants Program application period begins September 11, 2020.
- Application deadline is December 11, 2020. Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on this date.
- Awarded projects will be announced in Spring 2021. Unanticipated circumstances may result in announcement delays.
- July 1, 2021 Awarded projects may begin on or after this date.

Substantiated project partners are required for General grants. Project partners are encouraged for Mini-grants.

General grant projects are required to provide a 20 percent (20%) project Match (cash funds or in-kind contributions). Although not required, Mini-grants are encouraged to include a project Match.

The EEGP is a reimbursement program for general grant recipients; however, mini-grant recipients may apply to receive a 100 percent upfront, advance payment.
