American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)
In-kind grants valued at up to $8,000 to USA nonprofit organizations, public schools, daycares, and city parks to install permanent shade structures in outdoor areas frequented by children and youth. Structures should be installed in locations that currently do not provide protection from the sun, including playgrounds, pools, or recreation spaces.
Each grant includes the cost of a shade structure and installation. The AAD also provides a
permanent sign to be installed near the shade structure and features sun-safety tips.

The Academy Shade Structure Grant Program is open to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, schools, daycares, or city parks that provide services, programs and curricula to children and teenagers who are 18 and younger.
To be considered for grants, applicants must:
- Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to sun-safety/skin cancer awareness by teaching sun-safety in the classrooms, practicing healthy sun habits while outside and making a commitment to educating the youth on the dangers of UV rays and skin cancer prevention. This awareness program can utilize the AAD’s Good Skin Knowledge Lesson Plans, materials developed from other organizations or original content developed specifically for your target audience. Sun-safety/skin cancer awareness program must be in place for at least one year prior to grant application.

- Be considering a shade structure that meets the stringent requirements of the Academy. See the Shade Structure Grant Program guideline book in Supporting Documents below for specific criteria on shade structure selection.
