Grants ranging from $1,500 to $2,500 to Central Massachusetts high schools and middle schools to promote understanding and awareness of youth mental health. Recipient schools will support the recruitment and implementation of student wellness and advisory teams, as well as other activities that promote youth mental health and wellness.

To be eligible for funding consideration, each applicant school must meet the following criteria:
-Recruit students to serve as Student Wellness and Advisory Teams (SWAT) members throughout the academic year.
-Develop student-led activities and events in their school that will promote the mental health and wellness of young people.
-Identify a teacher or staff person to serve as advisor to the SWAT.
-Create activities and/or materials for school faculty and parents that help raise awareness and understanding of child and adolescent mental health and wellness.
-Survey students, faculty and parents to assess their attitudes, knowledge and perceptions of mental illness.
-Commit SWAT members to participation in a mental health and wellness summit hosted by the SHINE Initiative.
-Report quarterly to the SHINE Initiative completed and proposed activities, number of meetings held, hours devoted to SWAT activities, and number of students reached within that school.
-At year-end, submit a line item budget that identifies all SWAT expenses incurred.
-Create a fund-raising activity to support the SWAT and to maintain a level of sustainability and capacity for self-sufficiency.

Term of Contract:

Funding awarded by the SHINE Initiative will be for the calendar year 2018. Schools will be eligible to apply annually for continued funding in subsequent years.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The SHINE Initiative will consider requests for funding from public or private high schools and middle schools that are based in Central Massachusetts.

SWAT funding recipients will be announced in February 2018.
