Grants to Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon Aboriginal- or First Nation-owned businesses to expand operations in order to strengthen the northern economy. Individual business owners and entrepreneurs may request funding assistance for a single project. Community-owned businesses may request funding for community economic development planning.

Eligible projects include:

-Collecting information about northern resources or land, or demographics
-Supporting the growth of key sectors, including tourism and innovation
-Developing technology or telecommunications
-Providing business counseling
-Developing and marketing new products

Eligible expenses include:

-Research and consultation (e.g. research, feasibility studies, planning, consultation, dissemination of knowledge);

-Supporting innovation (e.g. research, development of products and markets, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, business cases, assistance in establishing patents/standards/certification, development of relationships and organizations such as clusters conducive to new creative solutions, purchase of minor equipment and other minor capital investments for demonstration or pilot purposes or public multi-user services); and

-Building capacity of individuals and organizations (e.g. needs analysis, expert support to build the capacity of organizations to serve the economic interests of Northerners, multi-user e-business solutions for non-profit organizations and businesses).

Individual Aboriginal Entrepreneurs: Up to $99,999.
Community Owned Businesses: Up to $1,000.000.

This program is open to Canadian Aboriginal or First Nation’s persons and businesses.

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. Applicants are encouraged to contact their regional office (contact details below) prior to applying.

Applications will be processed within 1 month.

Community-owned businesses may not receive more than two-thirds of the total project cost for economic infrastructure projects or 80% of the total cost for all other types of projects.
