Grant Description
Grants to Minnesota nonprofit organizations for programs to benefit local residents in eligible locations. Focus areas include stabilizing families and individuals, helping children succeed, and empowering healthy lives. Applications must address a targeted issue in the funder's investment plan. Funding is intended to benefit individuals and families on the Iron Range (Northern St. Louis County and Eastern Itasca County), Koochiching County and Lake of the Woods County.

Vision of the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota: To make a bold local impact, bringing momentum and positive change to improve quality of life across the region. Investing in nonprofits, programs, and collaborations that equip and empower, creating opportunities for people to thrive in local communities.

Targeted issues:

  • Helping Children Succeed:
    • Literacy and youth development with an emphasis on the underserved.
    • Youth mental well-being
  • Empowering Healthy Lives:
    • Regional healthcare and oral healthcare
    • The well-being of area seniors
    • Services for veterans and service members
  • Stabilizing Families and Individuals:
    • Hunger and food access
    • Stable living environment for individuals and families  
    • Domestic violence, sexual assault, and sexual exploitation/trafficking
  • Transportation

Additional Eligibility Criteria
The UWNEMN seeks to invest in nonprofits, programs, and collaborations that equip and empower, creating opportunities for people to thrive in their communities.

Requirements to apply for UWNEMN funding:
1) Must be a 501(c)3 nonprofit, project with an established 501(c) serving as fiscal agent, or government organization whose program(s) align with UWNEMN priority funding areas: Empowering Healthy Lives, Helping Children Succeed, and Stabilizing Families and Individuals.
2) Must serve people in UWNEMN's service area.
3) Organization or program must address a targeted issue in UWNEMN's investment plan.

Pre-Application Information
2024 Fund Distribution Timeline:
- November 10, 2023 - Applications open to all nonprofits in UWNEMN's service area addressing a targeted issue in UWNEMN's investment plan
- January 16, 2024 - Applications due
- March 5, 2024 - UWNEMN interviews agencies & makes funding determinations.
- April 15, 2024 - First quarterly distribution of funding
