Fellowships of $60,000 to USA and Puerto Rico female postdoctoral scientists affiliated with qualified institutions for research in the fields of physical or material sciences, life sciences, engineering, technology, computer science, and/or mathematics. Consideration is given to talented applicants from diverse STEM fields who represent leading academic institutions and laboratories. Eligible applicants are female scientists looking to advance their research and serve as role models for the next generation of girls in STEM.

The research described in the applicant’s Research Proposal must be involved in the life, physical/material sciences, engineering, technology, computer science, and/or mathematics fields. The award is intended to support the applicant’s research project and provide career advancement. Fellowship funds can be used for tuition fees, attendance at meetings and conferences, hiring support staff (including undergraduate and graduate students), laboratory supplies, publication costs, computer and technical support, equipment, and instruments. Applicants may allocate up to 10% of their total budget estimate for community service or outreach projects beyond the scope of their proposed research plan (e.g., hosting a science workshop for K12 students with a local outreach organization).

The L’Oréal USA For Women in Science fellowship program awards five women postdoctoral scientists annually with grants of $60,000 each.

Term of Contract:

Winning fellows will have one year from the awards ceremony (November 18, 2021) to complete their twenty hours of service. Any extensions must be requested in writing and must be approved by L’Oréal USA and AAAS.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates must have completed their PhD and have started in their postdoctoral research position by the application deadline. In order to be eligible for the fellowship, a candidate must have a Ph.D. degree that was conferred on or before January 30, 2021. Applicants must be current postdoctoral associates or begin their postdoctoral position by January 30, 2021.

Eligibility Requirements:
- Candidates holding a Ph.D., D.P.H., or Sc.D. are eligible to apply. Candidates exclusively holding any other degree, including M.D. and D.V.M., are not eligible.
- Candidates from federal agencies or nonprofit organizations may apply as long as the agency or organization is able to accept funding.
- The fellowship is open to post-docs from the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
- Applicants must be American citizens (born or naturalized) or permanent residents (green card holders). Unfortunately, visa holders are not eligible to apply.
- Applicants must be affiliated with a U.S.-based academic or research institution.
- Psychology, science education, and social science are not eligible for this Fellowship.
- Applicants who hold faculty positions are not eligible.

Indirect or fringe costs including health insurance, rent, utilities, university overhead, etc. are not permitted.

A completed application requires three letters of recommendation. The first letter must be from a mentor or former advisor. The second letter must be from your post-doctoral advisor. The third letter may be from someone of your choice.

Please note that candidates must be available during the week of November 15, 2021 for the For Women in Science Awards Week if chosen as a winning Fellow.
