Grants and in-kind support to Nova Scotia nonprofit organizations, clubs, and cultural groups in eligible regions to support recreational projects, programs, and activities for the benefit of local residents. Funding may be requested for capital support, program support, special events, and leadership development. Applicants may also request in-kind grants in support of recreational activities. Programs must benefit the residents of the Municipality of West Hants.

The Recreation Grant Program is designed to support building the capacity of the voluntary sector by providing financial support to assist community volunteer organizations with the creation and expansion of recreation programs, events and facilities within the Municipality of the District of West Hants.

Grants Types: 

Capital Grants 

  • Type 1 - Assistance provided for recreation groups and/or organizations to build, erect, or maintain recreation halls of facilities. The facility shall be owned or leased by the applicant. 
  • Type 2 - Assistance provided to recreation groups for the purchase of equipment and program aids. Priority will not be given to buying recreation equipment that individuals or groups can be reasonably expected to buy for themselves. 

Program Grant

  • Assistance provided to groups interested in the creation, expansion and improvement of recreational opportunities in their communities. 

Special Event

  • Grants used to aid groups in holding or sponsoring a special event within the municipal area which will involve municipal residents in participatory as well as organizational roles. 

Leadership 

Grants available for recreation groups: 

  1. Seeking help to provide supervision and leadership to implement a program. 
  2. Wishing to have representatives attend leadership training that will improve the function of the group or the quality of leadership.

Municipal In-Kind Contribution

  • This grant is to be used for requests of municipal in-kind services such as fee rentals for municipally owned community parks and facilities or for staff time for set up or payment for use of municipal equipment such as transport of picnic tables or the rental of equipment etc. 

Priority will be given to projects which are most consistent with the Municipality of West Hants integrated Community Sustainability Plan (March 2010), Municipality of the Districts of West Hants Active Living Strategy 2018 - 2020, Trails Plan (November 2013), Active Transportation Plan (April 2015) and Parks and Open Space plan (2016).

-Capital Grants: $1,500 Maximum
-Program Grant: $750 Maximum
-Special Event: $750 Maximum
-Leadership: $750 Maximum
-Municipal In-Kind Contribution: The value of the in-kind contribution must be less than $1,000.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Any nonprofit, volunteer organization, club, cultural group etc. which encourages recreation programs, projects, or activities within a given community for the benefit of residents of the Municipality of West Hants may apply.

Please note that Capital Grants will only be considered for facilities that are located within the Municipality of the District of West Hants.

Groups registered as a Limited Company are not eligible for funding under this program.

Groups applying for capital grants must have title or lease to the land of facility in question (5 year minimum).

Funding Eligibility:
- Individuals are not eligible for funding under the Grants and Contributions Policy except through recognized organizations or where legislation allows the Municipality to do so.
- Funding will not be provided to offset accumulated deficits or funding shortfalls. Funding consideration is based only on budgeted revenues and expenditures in the year for which the assistance is requested.
- The applicant organization must spend or allocate grant funding within the current fiscal year for which it has been approved and for the sole purpose under which it has been granted.

Groups applying for capital grants must be financially capable of providing 2/3 of the cost (cash, in-kind labor, or volunteer fund raising).
