Iowa's Center for Agricultural Safety and Health (I-CASH)
Grants of $500 to Iowa youth groups and organizations for youth-led projects that aim to prevent the risk of farm-related illness and injury due to hazard exposure. Youth will plan and conduct a farm safety or health educational program, campaign, or social media event.
Suggested activities may include: planning and carrying out a farm safety/health event; distributing safety/health related resources; or developing materials to promote farm safety and health. More ideas are listed in the attached RFP below (see Project Description page). Emphasis will be given for youth involvement and the program description when scoring projects.
In addition to these Agricultural Youth Grants, I-CASH awards an Outstanding Youth Grant Award: The winners are invited to the annual Midwest Rural Agricultural Safety and Health Conference to present their project. The 2017 Outstanding Youth Grant Award went to the Washington County 4-H Chapter. They used their grant funds to support their ongoing project, Stay Safe, Take a Break, that encourages safe harvest practices.
Other past projects have included:
- Distributing ear plugs, sun screen, and cookies to farmers at harvest time
- Building a farm safety hazard hunt display
- Held a coloring, poster, or writing contest about tractor, ATV, livestock safety
- Develop livestock safety manuals and signs for county fair participants.
Criteria for selection will be based on objectives, use of funds, collaboration, and proposed activities.
Grantees are encouraged to work with the I-CASH affiliates for expertise and resources. They include The University of Iowa, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Iowa Department of Public Health, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, AgriSafe Network, Easter Seals, National Education Center for Agricultural Safety, Proteus, and other safety and health organizations.
