Grants of up to $20,000 to Tennessee nonprofit organizations providing health-related programs in eligible regions to address the needs of staff during times of conflict or transition. Funding is intended to increase compassion, improve the work environment, and strengthen leadership through program implementation. Applications are invited from Middle Tennessee organizations.

Applications are invited from Middle Tennessee organizations serving the following counties: Stewart, Houston, Humphreys, Perry, Wayne, Montgomery, Dickson, Hickman, Lewis, Lawrence, Robertson, Cheatham, Williamson, Maury, Giles, Sumner, Davidson, Marshall, Lincoln, Moore, Bedford, Rutherford, Wilson, Trousdale, Macon, Clay, Jackson, Smith, Dekalb, Cannon, Coffee, Franklin, Warren, Van Buren, White, Putnam, Cumberland, Fentress, Overton, and Pickett.

Staff Support Grants can be used to support the staff during times of transition or conflict including (but not limited to) organizational growth, mergers, staff loss/grief, leadership or CEO transitions, and/or emotionally difficult seasons. The funds can support leadership training, staff development, and/or consulting programs to address issues like turnover, staff communication, or staff burnout.

Applying organizations must have sustainable programs that fit into one or more of the areas of interest and provide direct clinical services:*

  1. Physical Health (Must provide direct clinical services, caregiver support, or health system navigation through the Get Covered TN initiative to apply under physical health)
  2. Mental Health
  3. Recovery from Substance Abuse
  4. Healing from Abuse, Neglect, or Violence

*Direct clinical services are services that are provided to clients by medical professionals.

Estimated Size of Grant:

The maximum amount that can be requested for these grants is $20,000.

Term of Contract:

Awards are granted on a year-to-year basis. The Trust provides no-cost extensions in some instances.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grants are only made to non-profit organizations with locations in Middle Tennessee that have been in operation as a 501(c)(3) for at least one year and that operate health-related programs that produce measurable health outcomes or advocate for healthcare access. Applying organizations must also have operating expenses of less than $20 million and the majority of the organization’s programs must be health-focused. Additionally, the organization must serve clients that have limited access to resources. National organizations must have a Tennessee-based board, separate financial statements (including a 990 or an audit), and a location in Middle Tennessee in order to be eligible to apply. All grant proposals should display and emphasize respect for the dignity of all persons.

Grants are available to nonprofits in good standing that have received funding from the Trust in the last three years.

Applicants must also have their own statement of inclusiveness or non-discrimination. The Trust does not fund:
- Capital projects: purchase, construction, or renovation of facilities
- Individuals and fraternal organizations
- Other grant-making organizations
- Organizations that have discriminatory policies or practices
- Partisan politics, political lobbying, or electoral campaigns
- Single disease, research-oriented organizations
- Startup organizations
- Organizations whose purpose is to raise money for another nonprofit

Applicants are allowed to apply only twice per year (i.e., if an applicant is not awarded a grant the first time that they apply, they may make one more application attempt within a 12 month period.) All proposals are due by 4 PM on the day of the deadline.

Staff Support Grants require an in-kind match from the recipient, based on budget size.

- $500,000 to $999,999: 20% match required
- $1,000,000 to $1,499,999: 30% match required
- $1,500,000 to $1,999,999: 40% match required
- $2,000,000 to $10,000,000: 50% match required
