Grants of $1,000 and program support to Louisiana early childhood and childcare centers, Head Start programs, libraries, museums, churches, schools, and additional community organizations for literacy programs for children ages 3-5. Programs will introduce families with young children to the humanities and literature through age-appropriate storytelling, discussion, and literary exploration via center-based play.

Trained facilitators read award-winning children’s books and guide groups to personally connect with literature through open-ended questioning and center exploration activities. The program models strategies that encourage family bonding, reading, and critical thinking through the discussion and exploration of literature. Programs take place in the evenings, and start times can range between 4:30 - 7:00 PM. Programs require three team members to implement the program.

The format is an interactive story sharing and group discussion that takes place in one 90-minute session per week for six weeks. The program targets families with children 3-5 years old. The program is designed to facilitate 10-15 families per program. Program sessions are 90 minutes long once a week in the evenings for six consecutive weeks. Each evening session includes a free nutritious meal for all participants, books given to families, center activities are provided for family learning, and a lively open-ended discussion based on award-winning children’s literature.

Louisiana-based sites will receive materials, training, and a stipend to implement the program at their site. Accepted programs receive a set of six books for each family in the program. Program Coordinators and Preschool Facilitators receive training and program manuals on the PRIME TIME methodology. Sites receive a kit with the necessary materials to publicize their program. Program site receives a stipend to provide meals, centers, and door prizes to participants. All three team members are also compensated with a stipend at the close of the program.

Program Support Stipend:

Each program has the option to accept a $1,000 program support stipend to implement the program. It is possible to implement the program without accepting the stipend. Please check to ensure the applicant agency is able to receive the stipend before completing the application. If the agency can accept the stipend indicate to which agency or party the payment should be made.
