Opportunity for USA high school and post-high school students who are studying in a graphic communications or printing, graphic design, advertising, or interactive media program to participate in a competition and win awards. Awards are intended to recognize students who have designed and produced a printed greeting card for any occasion. Students should demonstrate the knowledge of designing for and producing a printed product; executing the steps from design concept to file preparation to printed output. Students must work independently to produce individual entries.

Winners are chosen by a panel of industry judges who will evaluate the greeting card based on:
- Creativity and originality
- Unique expression
- Widespread appeal
- Captivating design
- Clear identification of the greeting card theme
- Correct use of any optional printing enhancements.

Any printing enhancement is welcome, but not required. Examples include:
- Foil Stamping
- UV Coating
- Spot UV
- Die Cutting
- Laminating
- Spot color
- Metallic Ink
- Embossing
- Debossing

Estimated Size of Grant:

-1st Place Awards: $2,000 plus a two-day all-expenses paid trip for the student and instructor to attend PRINT 19, October 3-5, 2019, in Chicago, IL
-2nd Place Awards: $1,500
-3rd Place Awards: $1,000

Term of Contract:

All entries must be completed during the 2018-2019 school year.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible students attend recognized secondary or post-secondary institutions in the continental United States, studying in a graphic communications/printing, advertising, graphic design or interactive media program.

All entries must be submitted by the instructor. Entries must be of the original work of the student and contain no trademark or copyright material.

Instructors are encouraged to submit an unlimited number of entries—one entry per student.

Pre-Application Information:

Entries must be postmarked by Friday, June 7, 2019. Entries must include both a mailed printed greeting card and an online submission.

Entry must include a digital image of the greeting card; portraying the card on display – NOT the design file.

Instructors are responsible for submitting student entries. All entries become the property of the Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF) and the Graphic Arts Show Company (GASC), and may be reproduced and distributed. Entries will not be returned.

The digital images will be used to showcase the entries for display purpose:
- Online
- In the GAERF Student Design Competition exhibit at PRINT® 19 (October 3-5, 2019, McCormick Place, Chicago, IL)
- In a slide presentation of all entries (throughout the duration of PRINT 19)
- For signboards of the winning entries (on site at PRINT 19, October 2019).
