Grant Description
Grants of up to $20,000 per year to California nonprofit organizations in eligible locations for programs benefiting women and girls. Funding is intended to support programs in the areas of financial stability, mental health, and childcare. Funds may be used to support new programs as well as to strengthen or expand currently existing ones. Activities must benefit girls and women in San Luis Obispo County.

Women’s Legacy Fund’s mission is to be a catalyst for philanthropy that improves the lives of women and girls in San Luis Obispo County. This year, funding with focus on programs or projects that support: 

Girls Mental Health

  • Examples: self-care, chronic sadness, self-esteem, addressing bullying and harassment, internet safety 

Women's Financial Stability

  •  Examples: Ffnancial literacy & education, economic independence, support for   Latinas, income disparity, food security, senior support, housing stability

Childcare 

  • Examples: access to childcare for low-income families, expanded capacity for childcare, improvement of childcare facilities, professional development for pre-k and preschool educators

Additional Eligibility Criteria
The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County supports charitable organizations whose programs primarily benefit San Luis Obispo County residents. An organization must have a current tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service under Section 501(c)(3) and/or 509(a)1 or a current memorandum of understanding outlining fiscal sponsorship partnership to apply.

Ineligible
The Community Foundation San Luis Obispo County does not make grants to/for:
- Individuals
- Organizations that discriminate on the basis of age, disability, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, race or religion
- Fraternal Organizations, unless in support of a specific program open to or benefiting the entire community
- Governmental Organizations
- Indirect Administrative costs greater than 15% of the awarded funds (indirect administrative funds are defined as office supplies and do not include staff time)
- Fundraising events such as annual campaigns, walk-a-thons, tournaments, fashion shows, auctions or dinners
- Organizations with religious affiliations unless the program is open to the entire community without regard to religious beliefs
- Organizations and programs designed to elect candidates to public office
- Organizations located outside San Luis Obispo County unless for a specific program benefiting residents of-and conducted within-San Luis Obispo County
- Pay off past debts or existing obligations
- Endowment funds
- Scholarships, fellowships, travel grants and technical or specialized research

Estimated Size of Grant
The Women’s Legacy Fund will award a maximum grant amount of $20,000 per year for a total of $40,000 for two-year proposals.

Term of Contract
Funding is for one year or multi-year (up to two years) projects.

Two-year grant proposals are designated for projects that are outlined to take two years to complete. For example: year-one is dedicated to planning and hiring, and year-two will support implementation.
