Grants of up to $15,000 to New Mexico nonprofit organizations, IHEs, and tribes to develop and maintain community forests. Funding is available for program improvement and development, assessments and inventories, training and professional development, and environmental education.

Background: The Community Forestry Assistance Cost-Share Program is funded through the Cooperative Forestry agreement between EMNRD, Forestry Division and the State and Private Forestry Program of the Southwest Region of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service (USFS).  Funding is allotted as available to provide cost-share funds to develop and manage sustainable urban and community forestry programs in New Mexico.  

Scope of Work: EMNRD seeks applications in the categories below to address the development and management of community forests to sustain community forest health in New Mexico.  

1) Program Development and Improvement:

Project examples - Community forestry board or tree board development; tree ordinance development or revision; efforts toward becoming a Tree City USA; development or implementation of community forest, street tree, or tree risk management plans; implementing tree improvement and replacement programs; maintaining and improving community tree cover; and, enhancement of existing urban forestry programs and services.  

2) Inventory and Assessment:

Project examples - Tree inventory and assessment; canopy cover mapping; assessing green infrastructure development strategies; community forest benefit assessments; community forest health and risk assessments; and, community forest resource analysis.

3) Training, Certification, and Professional Development:

Project examples – Arborist or community forestry training for staff and volunteers; tree planting and maintenance training for community volunteers invested in community forestry efforts; International Society of Arboriculture certification scholarships for community foresters (study materials, exam costs, first year membership); professional development through attendance at the Municipal Forestry Institute, Arbor Day Foundation Partners in Community Forestry Conference, or other EMNRD-approved arborist or community forestry conferences; green infrastructure planning and implementation courses; and, tree care worker training on planting, care, and maintenance of trees.

4) Environmental Education:

Project examples – Creating and implementing environmental education programs that focus on urban and community forestry issues; strategy development and demonstration project establishment for improving the understanding of the benefits of community forests; and, engaging communities in urban forestry establishment and stewardship.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Offerors may submit applications with funding requests for any amount up to a maximum of $15,000.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

This RFA is directed at 501(c)(3) organizations and non-federal governmental entities, including public colleges and universities and tribes.

All applicants must review the criteria indicated on the Federal Eligibility Checklist provided at the end of Attachment 1 in the application. Successful Applicants will be required to comply with that Checklist.

Successful Offerors must be able to provide a dollar-for-dollar match, either in cash, in-kind contributions, or both.
