Request a Grant Writer

Grants to Maine municipalities for the maintenance and development of recreational trails for all-terrain vehicles (ATV). Funding may be requested for the creation of a new trail, the construction of parking facilities or new bridges, and the rerouting of an existing trail. Grant requests for main artery trails are encouraged.

Most trail development or improvement costs such as gas, oil, equipment rental, equipment repair, bridge material, or reasonable contract costs, are eligible if the work is contracted. Recipient towns may contract with an individual, an organization, or an ATV club to do the work.

Recommended trail guidelines and trail signing guidelines are included in the material accompanying the application. If circumstances warrant, the Bureau can make exceptions, providing they do not detract from the safety and enjoyment of the user. Written permission or written verification of verbal permission from landowners is required.

Term of Contract:

Municipalities must make a one-year commitment to participate in this program. There is no specific long-range commitment, but continued participation should be considered in the initial planning process. In the event a project calls for considerable development expenditure, the continued operation of the project would be a factor in approval.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Only Maine municipalities may apply.

ATV clubs must work through their municipal officials or county officials, who must submit the application.

Capital equipment purchases are not a reimbursable expense: however, reasonable hourly or seasonal rental fees can be charged. Reasonable charges will depend on the type of equipment used and whether operating costs are charged.

Pre-Application Information:

The deadline to submit an application is May 30. Certified mail is recommended.

The last date to submit a reimbursement request is November 30.

The State provides up to 70% of the cost of an approved project.

This is a reimbursement program. Local money must be spent before state money is made available.
