Foundation / Corporation
San Antonio Area Foundation
05/04/18 - Midnight CST - Deadline is for Phase II applications; Phase I applications are due on the first business day of each month throughout the year.
Grants to San Antonio Area, Texas nonprofit organizations in eligible counties for capacity building initiatives. A Phase I application may be submitted on the first business day of each month. Eligible counties are Bexar County and the surrounding counties of Frio, Atascosa, Karnes, Wilson, Guadalupe, Gonzales, Comal, Blanco, Kendall, Gillespie, Kerr, Bandera and Medina. Funding is intended to build the organizational capacity of nonprofit agencies and help them better fulfill their missions and serve their clients.
Grants are awarded in a two-phase process.
1. Organizational Assessment (Phase I) grant:
Nonprofit agencies submit a Phase I grant to apply for funding to conduct the Core Capacity Assessment Tool (CCAT), an online assessment to identify the agency's strengths and opportunities for improvement.
2. Strengthening Nonprofits (Phase II) grant:
Nonprofit agencies that conduct the CCAT from the Phase I grant will convene their Board of Directors and senior staff members to develop a plan for strengthening their agency that aligns with the assessment results, which forms the basis for the Phase II funding request. Nonprofit agencies may then apply for a Strengthening Nonprofits Phase II grant to implement the project.
Funding is available for:
-Leadership training, coaching, professional/staff development
-Strategic planning, consulting services, technology resources
-Peer learning, learning communities
-Other areas that will build the capacity of nonprofit organizations, enabling them to better fulfill their mission.
GrantWatch ID#: 173836
The amount of the organizational assessment grant will be $250. This covers the cost to take the CCAT and a small amount to purchase snacks or refreshments to convene your board of directors and leadership staff to review the results. In terms of the SNP Phase II grants, organizations should ask for the amount needed to fund the program.
There are two types of grant applications available through the Strengthening Nonprofits grantmaking initiative – the Organizational Assessment (Phase I) grant and the Strengthening Nonprofits (Phase II) grant. 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving Bexar County and surrounding counties are eligible to apply for the Phase I Organizational Assessment grant.
501 (c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving Bexar and surrounding counties that participate in the CCAT and develop a corresponding plan for strengthening the agency may apply for a Phase II Strengthening Nonprofits grant.
Nonprofit organizations that provide training and consulting services to help strengthen nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply for this funding; however, only if the funding is to build their own agency’s capacity. The Foundation will award grants to nonprofit agencies that allow them to access training and consulting services.
Newly-formed agencies should wait one-two years after being incorporated to submit a grant application to ensure that survey respondents are able to answer the questions in the CCAT.
Universities are not eligible for these grants. Because the initiative is designed to build the capacity of the nonprofit community, it is not a good fit for higher education institutions.
