Grants of up to $2,500 to West Virginia artists to enhance artistic skills. Funding is intended to support activities that further the abilities of both established and emerging artists and advance their careers within the field. Funds may be used for structured trainings, workshops, courses, and innovative internship programs. The purpose of the grant program is to enable artists to gain the skills and support required to develop art-based businesses and thriving arts careers.

The Professional Development for Artists & Artisans Grant Program provides competitive funds to support individual artists in enhancing, expanding or improving their work by gaining the skills and support they need to develop thriving arts career or art-based businesses.  It provides funding to support participation in professional development and skills-building activities, including structured courses, workshops, trainings and unique internship programs.

Examples of Eligible Expenses: 

  • Fees associated with an exceptional opportunity for advanced study with a significant master or mentor (outside of a classroom setting and not related to any degree program)
  • Travel expenses associated with an imminent, specific professional artistic opportunity, conference, seminar or workshop
  • Tuition or registration fees for conferences, seminars, workshops and residency programs 
  • Materials and equipment to complete work for a scheduled gallery exhibition, performance, publication or unique artistic opportunity that will significantly advance an artist’s career

Examples of Eligible Activities: 

  • Attending professional development workshops, conferences or seminars, including travel, registration fees, meals, and lodging (outline of workshop curriculum required)
  • Participating in self-designed apprenticeships/mentorships (letter of support, syllabus or curriculum outline and signed contract from master artist required)
  • Learning to build and maintain a professional web site
  • Purchasing new equipment (excluding computers except where a computer is the primary tool used)
  • Remodeling or building a safe and energy-efficient studio

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Funding level: Up to 75 percent of eligible costs for the first year / first-time applicants, not to exceed $2,500;
- Up to 50 percent of eligible costs for subsequent years / previously funded applicants, not to exceed $2,500

Term of Contract:

- Round One: Projects must occur between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022.
- Round Two: Projects must occur between Jan. 1, 2022 and June 30, 2022.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Eligible applicants are individual artists who are
- 18 years of age or older
- A U.S. citizen
- A legal resident of West Virginia

Additionally, applicants must have:
- Resided in West Virginia for at least one year prior to application deadline
- Submitted all final reports in conjunction with previous WVDCH/Arts grants

Individuals are eligible for ONE Professional Development grant award per year

Ineligible Activities:
- Costumes
- Marketing/promotions of exhibits and shows
- Publishing and printing costs
- Royalty fees
- Space rental fees

Postmark Deadlines:
- Round One: February 1, 2021 - For projects occurring between July 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022
- Round Two: October 1, 2021 - For projects occurring between Jan. 1, 2022 and June 30, 2022

Complete the application and submit to the selected round; deadlines represent a postmark deadline.

If the postmark deadline for a grant program falls on a weekend, the postmark deadline moves to the first following work day. Hand deliveries will be accepted in the Arts office between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the deadline date.

- 30 Days: Grant recipients must submit a Final Report within 30 days of the project end date

First time applicants must provide a minimum of 25% cash match of total project costs; all previously funded applicants must provide a minimum of 50% cash match for total project costs.
