Artist in Residence Grant

Grants to North Dakota Nonprofits and Schools to
Integrate Art Into Classrooms and Student Programs

Grants of up to $5,000 to North Dakota schools and nonprofit organizations to place professional artists in classrooms or educational programs occurring before or after the regular school day. Applicants must contact program staff prior to beginning the application process.

Activities take place during the regular school year, last three days or longer, and may be scheduled before, during, or after the regular school day. The AIR Program is designed not to replace, but to build upon and enhance a schools’ existing art programs and vision for future programming.

Up to $5,000

Residencies may vary in length, but must be a minimum of three days and can be up to a full year. This cycle funds residency projects that are scheduled to take place between January 1 and June 30 of the upcoming school year.

Any nonprofit organization registered with the State of North Dakota as a nonprofit (including non-arts organizations) or school may apply to the AIR program.

Not Funded:
- Costs related to social entertainment and reception expenses.
- Costs related to prizes and awards.
- Costs related to permanent equipment.
- Costs related to non-art field trips, lyceums, or lecture-based activities.

North Dakota Council on the Arts is currently transitioning to a new online grant application process.

Schools and teachers wishing to apply for the Artist in Residence Grants must contact the Arts in Education Director at for detailed instructions before registering or starting the online application.

Teaching artists not currently listed on the NDCA Artist in Residence Roster, must submit a New Artist Application form.

Projects that include teaching artists residing within North Dakota may request 70% of the artist's negotiated fee and expenses with a 30% match required.

Projects that include teaching artists that reside outside the state of North Dakota may request 50% of the artist's negotiated fee and expenses with a 50% match required.
