Grants starting at $500 to USA nonprofits in multiple States to benefit the funding source’s communities in the areas of leadership, education, environment, community development, human needs, and culture. In addition to programmatic requests, applicants may also request sponsorship for qualifying charitable events.

Eligible States include Alabama, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin.

Funding Areas:

1) Leadership Development
Programs that provide unique experiences to equip individuals with leadership skills.

2) K-12 Education
-Programs that increase the number of college undergraduates entering the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines, thereby expanding the STEM workforce pipeline.

3) Higher Learning Education
-Specific academic departments of engineering, science and business that prepare students to enter the professional workforce.
-Programs and institutions that prepare students for technical and skilled trade careers in the energy industry.
-Programs that increase student retention and success in engineering, the sciences and business with a focus on women and minorities.

4) Environment
-Programs that protect and restore the environment and enhance the quality of life in the funding source’s communities.
-Education programs that build understanding of the environment and promote an understanding of the links between environmental stewardship and sustainable development, including education about renewable energy and energy efficiency, that reaches a broad audience.

5) Development
-Priority will be given to transformational projects in urban core cities that can demonstrate significant economic impact.

6) Diversity
-Programs and organizations that enhance and promote understanding and inclusiveness.
-Programs and organizations that encourage and advocate for effective, positive change to combat discrimination.
-Programs and organizations that celebrate and enhance awareness of different cultures.

7) Human Needs
-Priority will be given to supporting organizations that are in the forefront of addressing the critical, acute human needs brought on by the economic downturn.

Grants are awarded in the following increments:
-$500 - $2,000
-$2,001 - $10,000
-$10,000 or greater

Event sponsorships are awarded in the following increments:
-$5,000 or less
-$5,000 or more

To be considered for a charitable contribution from DTE Energy or the DTE Energy Foundation, the requesting organization must meet all of the following criteria:

-Be located in or provide services to a community in which DTE Energy does business. See a service area map here:

-Be a nonprofit (i.e. be exempt for federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and not a private foundation, as defined in Section 509(a) of the Code)

Not Funded:
-Individuals (including those seeking direct scholarships)
-Political parties, organizations or activities
-Religious organizations for religious (denominational) purposes
-Organizations that are not able to demonstrate commitment to equality and diversity (clients, staff, and board composition)
-Student group trips
-National or international organizations, unless they are providing benefits directly to service-area residents
-Projects that may result in undue personal benefit to a member of the DTE Energy Foundation board, or to any DTE Energy employee
-Conferences unless they are aligned with DTE Energy's business interests
-Single purpose health organizations
-Hospitals, for building or equipment needs

The application period is October 24 - November 4, 2016 for a response by February 10, 2017.
