Grants to metro Birmingham area, Alabama nonprofit organizations for community service initiatives. Funding is intended for, but not limited to, projects, programs, and services in the areas of arts and culture, education, health, human services, and community involvement.

An organization must meet the following criteria in order to submit a proposal:

- Must be an IRS tax-exempt organization, a 501(c)(3) with a professionally-printed letterhead that depicts a physical address, mailing address, phone number, and an e-mail address
- Must be within the Foundation’s targeted funding area, which is primarily the metro Birmingham area
- Must serve a viable purpose and have strong financials
- Must have strong leadership with a committed, active board of directors and/or advisory board
- Must be in concert with Protective Life Corporation’s culture, mission and values

Generally, proposals from the following organizations will not be reviewed:

- Those from organizations not within Protective's targeted funding area, which is primarily the metro Birmingham area
- Public or private schools with grades K-12
- Churches, public facilities, state organizations or state-supported organizations
- Animal-related causes
- Sporting events, walks, or runs
- Other corporate or private foundations

Required information:

I. Proposal (maximum of 4 pages)

- Signed cover letter
- Name, address, phone, e-mail and contact person of organization seeking the grant
- Mission/brief overview of the organization
- Intended use of the request
- Project description and evaluation
- Specific amount of request, including whether it is a single or multi-year request

II. Financials (in addition to the proposal)

- Income and expense statement from the most recent fiscal year
- Project budget
- Information on whether the organization currently has any reserves, endowment funds or other sources of revenue (city, state, federal, United Way, etc.) other than private corporate and individual donors, and if so, an explanation of those assets
- List of other corporations/foundations being solicited and the status of each request
- List of other corporate/foundation supporters

III. General Organization (in addition to the proposal)

- Executive Director's experience/brief bio
- Number of full-time and part-time staff members
- List of the Board of Directors
- Copy of tax-exempt letter from the IRS
