Grants of $2,500 to New York City preschools and early childhood education centers to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles. Preference will be given to programs that serve low-income families. Projects will involve installations that promote daily physical activity and nutrition food.

Examples of active design projects for early childhood settings include:

-Creation of active playgrounds with painted ground markings, stepping stones, varied elevation, and circulation paths;

-Beautification of outdoor spaces with murals or other art;

-Incorporation of natural elements into the space such as raised beds or vertical garden;

-Installation of shade structures;

-Promotion of active learning by installing music walls on fences and outdoor water tables.

Priority will be given to projects that:

-Illustrate high need and are dedicated to improving health equity in low-income neighborhoods (measured in part by the percent of students receiving meal subsidies);

-Demonstrate the capacity to implement active design projects;

-Demonstrate the capacity to maintain active design projects (this includes project ideas that align with existing programming and/or curricula);

-Have established linkages and support from community organizations.

A maximum of $200 of the award can be spent on loose toys (balls, hula hoops, jump ropes, etc.). You may use a portion of the award to hire someone to help with implementing the new enhancements into your space.



The project completion deadline is May 26, 2017.

This award is open to early childhood centers serving ages 3-5 including:
-DOE Pre-K sites
-Private early childhood centers
-Daycare centers
-Community-based preschools

Sites who received an award in previous years are eligible to apply again.

Please note that the following will not be funded: salaries, consultant fees, speaker honorariums, rent, utilities, web hosting and development, 501(c)(3) incorporation fees, luxury items, audio/visual equipment, subscriptions, back-to-school items, block parties, and computer equipment.
