Awards to Louisiana public school teachers and principals to recognize outstanding contributions to education in their district. The purpose of this award is to honor teachers and administrators who have made exemplary progress in enhancing the quality of education. Nominations will be accepted from teachers, principals, district employees, parents, colleagues, and community members on behalf of teachers or principals.

Excellent educators are those who:

-Demonstrate excellence in the field, guiding students of all backgrounds and abilities to achieve excellence.

-Consistently demonstrate a positive impact on student achievement.

-Collaborate with colleagues, students, and families to create a school culture of respect
and success.

-Demonstrate leadership and innovation in and outside of the classroom walls that embodies lifelong learning.

-Express themselves in an engaging and articulate way.

The selected 2018 Louisiana Teacher and Principal of the Year will be submitted to the national pool for the chance to win National Teacher and Principal of the Year awards.

1 Teacher; 1 Principal

Louisiana public school teachers and principals are eligible for nomination.

The 2018 Teacher and Principal of the Year process will follow the below timeline:

-October 11, 2016: 2018 Application materials released and nominations portal opened

-December 2016: State-level online application portal opens. Districts/LEAs may select up to three overall Teacher and Principal of the Year finalists, one per division (elementary, middle and high), to move on to the state competition.

-January 19, 2017: State-level online applications are due

-March 2017: Department announces 48 semi-finalists (24 teachers and 24 principals)

-May 2017: Department announces 18 finalists (9 teachers and 9 principals)

-June 2017: State interview committees interview finalists

-July 28, 2017: The Department, in partnership with Dream Teachers, recognizes and celebrates the Teacher and Principal of the Year honorees and announces the overall division and state winners at the Eleventh Annual Cecil J. Picard Educator Excellence Symposium and Celebration.

Stakeholders (teachers, principals, district employees, parents, colleagues, and community members) may nominate an outstanding teacher and/or leader. Multiple nominations may be submitted.

Self-nominations will also be accepted.
