Grants to Texas and New Mexico Indian tribal communities, leaders, and organizations, as well as non-Pueblo organizations serving Pueblo communities to address needs related to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) health crisis and for programs related to the preservation and/or continuity of Pueblo culture and traditional lifeways.

Funding Priorities:

  • Language preservation and revitalization programs.
  • Traditional architecture and building.
  • Sustainable agriculture: traditional food ways and cooking practices; understanding of plants and their medicinal uses.
  • Traditional arts and crafts instruction: intergenerational programs.
  • Tribal and ancestral history; oral histories and storytelling.
  • Youth education and leadership: traditions and elements of ceremonial life; ecology and environmental stewardship; innovative uses of technology. Special consideration is given to programs that include a language component.
  • Intercultural Exchange and Education

Emergency Relief Funding: During 2021 the Foundation will be accepting applications for the established priority areas as well as COVID-19 Emergency Relief Funding. Chamiza has set the following grant making priorities for relief efforts:

  • Food, medical supplies, and personal items
  • Water
  • Community Relief and Recovery Needs
  • Internet access and connectivity
  • Other needs and expenses directly related to the COVID-19 pandemic

Estimated Size of Grant:

Chamiza Foundation grant awards vary in size, on average from $3,000 to $12,000.

Chamiza is also accepting applications that respond to direct threats from COVID-19. The grant awards range from $3,000 to $12,000.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Chamiza Foundation invites proposals from the following:
- New Mexico’s 19 Pueblo Indian tribal communities
- Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, El Paso, Texas, member of the All Pueblo Council of Governors and the 20th Pueblo
- Pueblo community leaders
- Non-Pueblo organizations that serve Pueblo communities. These entities must submit a letter of support from the Governor of the Pueblo as evidence that the community has requested their involvement

Funding Restrictions:
- The Foundation’s focus at present does not include construction or renovation projects unless they include a traditional architectural aspect, a youth education component, and do not interfere with traditional ways of community participation.
- Generally, the foundation does not support programs oriented to economic development, entrepreneurial enterprises, or health issues.

Pre-Application Information:

There are two opportunities to submit:
- First round: February 12, 2021
- Second round: May 7, 2021

The Board will meet on March 12, 2021 to make grant awards for the February deadline and June 11, 2021 to make grant awards for the May 7, 2021 deadline. Please note: If you need funding for the Summer of 2021, the Foundation recommends that you apply for the first round of funding. Please contact the Executive Director if you have any questions.
