Grants of up to $10,000 to South Carolina nonprofit organizations for specific projects, seed money for new programs, general operations, and capital support that will improve the quality of life in eligible communities. Grants may also be used as matching funds. Organizations should serve the Counties of Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester, as well as the communities of Newberry and Joanna.

Proposals that demonstrate the support of other grantmakers are encouraged.

The purpose of the Foundation is to support organizations and programs that strengthen community capacity and enhance individual involvement in achieving a better quality of life.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Most grants made by The Joanna Foundation are in the range of $1,000 to $3,000 for one year. Larger grants in the $5,000 to $10,000 range are less common and grants exceeding $10,000 are exceptional.

Term of Contract:

Multi-year commitments are rare and by invitation only.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

- The Joanna Foundation makes grants only to organizations qualifying as tax-exempt under the Internal Revenue Code and not classified as private foundations.
- The Foundation does not make loans or provide grants, scholarships or fellowships to individuals. Grant funds may not be used for lobbying or political purposes.
- The Foundation discourages recurring-type grants, and does not accept consecutive year requests.
- The funding area focuses on specific areas in South Carolina. Eligible organizations should be located within or demonstrate significant impact in at least one of the following areas: Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester Counties and the communities of Newberry and Joanna, SC.

In general, the Foundation does not make grants for:

- Debt reduction
- Research projects
- Direct support to individuals
- Conferences, symposia, or publications
- Tickets, tables, or advertising for fundraising events

Pre-Application Information:

Only one pre-proposal per organization will be accepted in a calendar year, unless a re-submission is specifically invited.

The Joanna Foundation has three funding cycles per year, with the following due dates for mandatory pre-proposals: January 15, April 15, and September 15.

Pre-proposals may be submitted no earlier than 15 days before the due date. This means that the window for submission will open on the 1st of the month. Pre-proposals must be submitted by email as a single pdf file and must be received no later than 5 PM ET on the due date. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Acceptance of pre-proposals may close early if the volume of submissions is very high. In this case, applicants will be notified promptly and encouraged to apply for the next due date.

Invitations and declinations are communicated by email within two weeks after the pre-proposal due date. Invitations include additional instructions and a new deadline, usually allowing approximately three weeks for submitting the full proposal.
