In-kind grants valued at $3,500 to USA and Canada nonprofit organizations to support horticulture education and neighborhood beautification through community gardens. Winners will receive tools and gift cards in support of their project. Applications are invited from organizations demonstrating a commitment to the long-term success of local gardens. Gardens will promote healthy and sustainable food sources, community collaboration and neighborhood beautification.
Examples of new garden initiatives and garden expansion initiatives Project Orange Thumb has supported in the past:
-Gardens that grow produce for school meal programs
-Gardens created to increase environmental and agricultural education in the community
-Gardens donating produce to hunger relief programs
-Gardens for nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and related facilities
-Gardens created to aid in healthy eating and lifestyle educational programs
The Project Orange Thumb Grant Program is intended to recognize projects that will make differences in their communities through unique community garden initiatives while demonstrating and communicating how a small group of people can make changes that affect and involve the entire community. Project Orange Thumb is intended to promote new garden space; therefore the applicant’s effort must involve a new garden, meaning that a garden must not have previously existed in the space(s) identified in the application. New garden expansions are eligible.
In light of those objectives, applications will be evaluated by the judges based on the following criteria: (i) adherence to all application and eligibility requirements; (ii) adherence to overall objectives, including communication objectives; (iii) initial impression; (iv) community involvement plan; and (v) overall project execution plans. Applications that fail to address any portion of the objectives are not eligible. The applications ranked highest by the judges will be designated as potential Grant recipients, subject to verification of eligibility and programming to the extent Sponsor deems necessary, and subject to final Sponsor approval.
