Grants to Shelby County, Indiana nonprofit organizations for programs that will enhance the quality of life of community residents. Funding is intended to support programs in the following areas: community, arts and culture, education and youth, health, and social services.

The Foundation has established five areas of interest for the grant-making program in order to address a wide variety of needs in Shelby County. These areas are:

- Community/Civic- support for community programs designed to improve life in Shelby County.
- Arts/Culture- support for programs and facilities that offer wide-spread opportunities for participation and appreciation.
- Education/Youth- support for programs at all levels of education.
- Health- support for the promotion of health and well-being for Shelby County residents.
- Social Services- support of human service organization programs.

Grant applications are encouraged for projects that include one or more of the following components:
- Anticipation of the changing needs of the community and flexibility in responding to those needs.
- Problem-solving ideas for established and documented needs. Emphasis will be on seed money and pilot projects.
- Encouragement of participation of other contributions by using matching challenges and other grant techniques.
- Careful coordination with other sources of funding such as government, other foundations and associations, and/or private contributions.
- Inducement to grant recipients to achieve capacity building objectives such as increased efficiency increased fundraising, delivery of better products etc...
- Demonstration of an appropriate ratio between dollar amount of request and number of people who will benefit.
- An appropriate funding match between the grantee and the Blue River Community Foundation versus more compatible sources of funding.

Grant Policies:
Grants will be made in accordance with the following policies:
- Only projects benefiting the residents of Shelby County will be considered.
- Organizations must have adequate accounting procedures in order to be considered for grants.
- Organizations without 501(c)3 designation must show documentation of charitable purpose. In the case of non-501(c)3 organizations, whenever possible, checks will be written to the vendors related to the completion of the project rather than to reimburse an individual. Proper documentation of expenses is always required.
- Generally, grants will not be made for programs and/or equipment which were committed to prior to the grant application being submitted.

The Blue River Foundation does not make grants for:
- Projects or programs not serving Shelby County residents.
- Individuals, except in the form of scholarships.
- Unless the Foundation is conducting a special program, grants are not made to create or augment organizational endowments or to annual campaign drives.
- Religious organizations, unless a non-sectarian need will be met and the project does not promote the teachings of a particular church or denomination.
- Projects which are considered part of a regular school curriculum.
- Travel for educational or other purposes.
- Political campaigns or to support attempts to influence legislation of any governmental body other than through making available the results of nonpartisan analysis, study, and research.

Pre-Application Information:

Please complete and submit the online grant interest form at least two weeks prior to the grant deadline for the cycle you are hoping to apply for. If the grant request meets the Foundation's funding guidelines, the organization will then be invited to submit our formal "Grant Application form." Please do not submit a grant application without first discussing it with the Foundation's program officer.

Grant applications are May 1 and August 1.

Applicants will be notified of the Foundation’s decisions within 60 days of the deadline date.

Grant requests must be received by the Foundation office no later than 5:00 PM on the deadline date. However, if the above dates fall on a weekend or holiday, the application is due on the last business day prior to that date.
