Grants of up to $2,500 and grants of up to $7,500 to Illinois and Missouri nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and faith-based organizations for general operating support and programs that benefit residents of eligible counties. Organizations and grants awarded must serve at least one of the following 12 counties: Adams, Brown, Hancock, or Pike in Illinois; Clark, Knox, Lewis, Marion, Monroe, Pike, Ralls, or Shelby in Missouri.

Through the Competitive Grant program, the Community Foundation seeks to:

  1. Fund impactful projects/programs that provide unique or innovative solutions to demonstrated community needs and opportunities;
  2. Fund requests in which the grant will make a significant impact on the success of the overall project/program;
  3. Fund requests in which general operating support will assist the organization in expanding or enhancing the delivery of its mission, particularly for underserved or at-risk populations;
  4. Fund projects that leverage community collaborations to maximize the impact on the community and population served;
  5. Reach a significant number of community members or specific groups of underserved community members throughout its 12-county service area.

Competitive grants are awarded from one, or more, Unrestricted, Field of Interest, and County Endowment Funds. One application will be considered for funding from each of the following:

Unrestricted Endowment Funds

  • Grant requests are considered in the fields of arts and culture, community betterment, education, health and human services.

Competitive Grants from Field of Interest Funds

  • Funds are set up with parameters for support in specific interest areas, such as arts education, youth development, health, patriotism, and more.

County Endowment Funds

  • Requests that directly impact a county that has an established County Endowment Fund, including Adams, Brown, Hancock, and Pike Counties in Illinois and Lewis and Marion Counties in Missouri.

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Program/Project Support Grant Requests: Grants will range from $1,000 to $7,500
- General Support Grant Requests: Requests and $1,000 to $2,500

Term of Contract:

Grant will be expended within one year of receipt of funds.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The Community Foundation will consider grant requests from:
1) Nonprofit organizations that are recognized as exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code
2) Governmental entities applying for grants that are exclusively for public and charitable purposes
3) Religious organizations as defined in Section 170(b)(1)(A) of the IRS Code

Eligible organizations are further defined in Section 170(c)(1) and170(c)(2) of the IRS Code. Staff will verify the charitable status of the organization using IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search (formerly Publication 78, IRS List of Charitable Organizations), and/or Guidestar Charity Check.

If an organization is a governmental entity, it must submit written confirmation that it is a unit of government. This confirmation might include, but is not limited to, a copy of the legislative act creating the entity or a letter from an authorized government official confirming the status.

An organization that does not meet the eligible organization criteria must submit the grant request under the umbrella of a 501(c)(3) organization who has agreed to be the “Fiscal Sponsor” for the grant request.

Activities generally not considered for support:
• Endowment and annual fund drives, budget deficits, and debt reduction
• Multi-year grants
• National fundraising efforts
• Sponsorships for fundraising or for-profit events or recurring events
• Grants for political campaigns or organizations that directly or indirectly participate in them

Pre-Application Information:

- March 1: Application opens on Community Foundation website.
- May 24: Deadline to request application review from Community Foundation staff.
- June 1: Application closes at 11:45 p.m.
- Late July: Applicants notified of grant awards.
- Mid-August: Grants awarded.

Community Foundation staff will review your application for completeness by appointment only. Appointment requests must be made prior to May 24, 2021. The Online Application must be submitted on or before 11:45 p.m. (central time) on June 1, 2021. Incomplete Grant Applications will be disqualified.
