Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $5,000 to Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming nonprofit organizations for programs related to environmental protection. First-time applicants must submit an LOI before applying. Focus areas include biodiversity, environmental education, mining, ecosystem/wilderness protection, environmental education, and rivers/water quality.

The Maki Foundation, established in 1981, is concerned with environmental protection in the western United States. The Foundation awards grants to organizations and projects where modest support can make a significant contribution. Many of the Foundation's grantees are grassroots groups with a focus on activism and policy change, particularly in the realm of public lands management. The Foundation often gives grants for specific projects, but is also willing to consider grants for general support.

At this time, the Foundation's priorities are as follows:

  • Wilderness and wildlands protection
  • Rver and wetlands conservation
  • Biological diversity conservation
  • Public lands management

Estimated Size of Grant:

Most awards range from $1,000 to $5,000.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Proposals must include a copy of the organization's 501(c)3 tax exemption ruling.

The Foundation rarely funds groups with annual budgets over $1 million.

The Foundation does not consider requests for the acquisition or construction of community recreation facilities, buildings, municipal parks, reservoirs, and similar projects. Limited resources preclude consideration of funding for wildlife rehabilitation centers, zoos, recycling programs, tree planting projects, toxic waste cleanup, film productions, and fellowships.

Pre-Application Information:

Proposals must be submitted via email by 11:59 P.M. MST, April 30th.

If you have never received a grant from the Maki Foundation, please send a brief letter of inquiry and the Foundation will be in touch.

If you have received a grant in the past, you may apply without a preliminary letter of inquiry.

The Board of Directors meets once a year in mid-summer. To be considered in the current year, proposals must be received by April 30th, 2021. Awards will be announced by September 15.

Due to the risks of Covid 19, submissions will happen via email. If this presents a difficulty, please contact the Foundation to make further arrangements.
