Foundation / Corporation
Fellowships of $2,500 per month to USA, Canada, and International scholars, artists, archivists, curators, and librarians for research utilizing a collection of art, manuscripts, and rare books from the early modern period. Funding is intended to support research that advances new scholarly agendas.
Applications are evaluated based on the proposed topic’s impact, its relevance to the field, the originality and sophistication of the scholar’s approach, the feasibility of the scholar’s research objectives, and their expected use of Folger collections. Particular weight is accorded to the scholar’s stated plan of work, and how their efforts will be concentrated in the Folger’s collections.
The Folger maintains apartments across the street from the Library, which are suitable for both long- and short-term stays. These apartments are offered at rents substantially below market-price for the Capitol Hill neighborhood. All Folger properties are equipped with modern conveniences, as well as wireless service and access to the Folger’s electronic databases. But it is important to remember that these are historic multi-level row houses, with both the charm and the limitations of older buildings. Fellows have priority in booking apartments, provided that the reservations are made no later than April 30 of any given year. After that, housing becomes available to all readers and bookings are made on a first-come, first-serve basis. Fellows are not obligated to live in Folger housing, but they may represent an added benefit to Folger fellowships, as they provide easy access to the Library and its resources and also enhance the sense of community which is so much a part of the fellowship experience.

Short-term fellowships support scholars in residence with a monthly stipend of $2,500.
The period of residence runs from June 2018 through June 2019, which offers scholars an opportunity to undertake a one- to three-month fellowship during the summer months.
The Folger has opened its short-term fellowships to members of the performing arts community, as well as scholars working at archives, museums, and libraries. Applications are welcomed from archivists, creative artists, curators, librarians, performers, and playwrights whose research will benefit from focused engagement with the Folger collections.
Folger fellowships are open to scholars of any nationality. Some short-term fellowships require a Ph.D. and others do not. Artists, archivists, curators, independent scholars, and librarians should hold appropriate terminal degrees in their field.
Folger staff, current consultants, and members of the Folger Shakespeare Library Board of Governors are not eligible to apply for Folger fellowships.
