Request a Grant Writer

Fellowships of $2,500 per month to USA, Canada, and International scholars, artists, performers, archivists, playwrights, curators, filmmakers, and librarians for research utilizing a collection of art, manuscripts, and rare books from the early modern period. Funding is intended to support research that advances new scholarly agendas.

Applications are evaluated based on the proposed topic’s impact, its relevance to the field, the originality and sophistication of the scholar’s approach, the feasibility of the scholar’s research objectives, and their expected use of Folger collections. Particular weight is accorded to the scholar’s stated plan of work, and how their efforts will be concentrated in the Folger’s collections.

The Folger maintains a limited number of apartments across the street from the Library, which are suitable for both long- and short-term stays. These apartments are offered at rents substantially below market-price for the Capitol Hill neighborhood. All Folger properties are equipped with modern conveniences as well as wireless service and access to the Folger’s electronic databases. But it is important to remember that these are historic multi-level row houses, with both the charm and the limitations of older buildings. Fellows have priority in booking apartments, but the priority booking window is limited. After that, housing becomes available to all researchers, and bookings are made on a first-come, first-serve basis. Fellows are not obligated to live in Folger housing, but they may represent an added benefit to Folger fellowships, as they provide easy access to the Library and its resources and also enhance the sense of community which is so much a part of the fellowship experience
