Grants starting at $20,000 to New Hampshire companies to partner with academic institutions on research projects that foster innovation in technology. Letters of intent are due by February 15, 2018. Funding is intended to help companies be more competitive, as well as to attract, grow, and retain companies in the state.

The NHIRC’s mission is to foster innovation in companies so they may be more competitive by developing new products or processes.

Applications are particularly encouraged in the following areas:
- Biomedical/Biotechnology, excluding clinical trials
- Engineering
- Information Technology
- Life Science
- Materials Science
- Manufacturing

Outcomes include:
- Increased competitiveness and profitability for businesses.
- An increase in the tax-base and in the number of quality jobs.
- Additional funding from investors.
- Federal funding of Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) awards.

Other benefits from NHIRC projects can include:
- Use of specialized equipment at universities that individual companies could not
- Field experience for students sometimes leading to employment following graduation.
- Patenting and/or licensing research, often leading to commercial ventures.
- Testing a theory before investing substantially.

If the applicant needs assistance in finding a research partner, the NHIRC will assist with “matchmaking.” The company must define the research problem that needs to be solved in this project. The NHIRC will try to find the right fit of expertise, facilities, and equipment at a NH academic institution and will contact the faculty researcher to determine whether there is interest in collaboration. This must be done early in the RFP timeline to allow adequate time for discussions between potential PIs and the industry partner.
