Grants of up to $3,000 to North Carolina nonprofit organizations and institutions to cover the costs of life science and biotechnology-related state meetings, conferences, and events. Applicants must register in advance of the deadline. Funding is intended to cover direct event costs such as speaker travel expenses, event site rental, and publicity.

The purpose of funding is to promote and support events, meetings, or conferences that advance the understanding or application of biotechnology and the life sciences for the benefit of North Carolina. Events must promote information sharing and personal interaction focused on life science research, education, or business.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Up to $3,000 may be requested for allowable expenses.

Term of Contract:

For the June deadline, Event/Meeting Dates are from July - September 2018.

For the September deadline, Event/Meeting Dates are from October - December 2018.

For the December deadline, Event/Meeting Dates are from January - March 2019.

For the March deadline, Event/Meeting Dates are from April - June 2019.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

North Carolina-based non-profit organizations or institutions hosting events being held in NC may apply.

Unallowable budget request items include:

- Food or refreshments for event attendees
- Food per diem allowances for speakers
- Registration fees for speakers
- Gifts and/or honoraria for speakers
- Consulting or administrative fees
- Personnel costs
- Prizes or gifts for participants
- Costs associated with items, services or supplies that will be used primarily beyond the scope of the event.
- Institutional overhead or facilities and administrative costs
- Rental fees for the Hamner Conference Center

This grant does not provide funds to promote a specific product or to benefit one or a few companies or individuals.

Proposal Deadlines for Fiscal Year 2018-2019:

Event/Meeting Dates: July - September 2018
Deadline: Wednesday, June 27, 2018 (noon)

Event/Meeting Dates: October - December 2018
Deadline: Thursday, September 6, 2018 (noon)

Event/Meeting Dates: January - March 2019
Deadline: Wednesday, December 5, 2018 (noon)

Event/Meeting Dates: April - June 2019
Deadline: Wednesday, March 6, 2019 (noon)

Important First Step: The Event Director/Primary Contact for the proposal must register for an account on the NCBiotech Funding Portal in advance of the deadline in order to submit a proposal. Please register at least five days before you plan to submit a proposal.

Although not required, a preliminary consultation may be helpful to the applicant to find out if an event qualifies for this grant and to obtain additional information. Draft budgets can also be reviewed prior to submission.

Other significant support for the event is expected in addition to Biotechnology Center funds. A BES grant is not intended to be the sole source of funding for an event.

Funds will be paid after receipt of required reports and invoice(s) at the end of the event.
