Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants of up to $80,000 to USA, Canada, and International storytellers for projects investigating the environmental movement around the world. Funding is intended to illuminate and document underrepresented communities that have traditionally been given less consideration in the environmental movement. Projects should align to one of three focus areas: wildlife, human journey, and changing planet.

The National Geographic Society wants to bring hidden stories to the surface and to understand in rich detail those who have been given far too little consideration in the environmental movement. It wants to tell stories that illuminate the policies and actions that have brought the global community to an unprecedented moment on the precipice of planetary climate disaster—and how frontline communities will feel the consequences much more than wealthy ones.

Examples of potential story angles:

  • Land use issues and access to healthy food
  • Local and Indigenous heroes  and the power they bring to protecting the natural world
  • Impacts of environmental degradation and resource extraction on local communities
  • Health impacts of access—or lack of access—to urban green spaces
  • Solutions and ways in which countries with less material wealth are leading in mitigating plastic use or pollution
  • Examining the complex relationships many cultures have with nature
  • Climate-related forces driving people to migrate from their homes
  • Rural communities and their changing connection and access to nature

Projects that benefit local audiences or incorporate local voices are strongly encouraged. Additionally, storytellers with unique access or perspective to or on the proposed project because of their personal identity or experience with the community they propose to work with will have higher likelihood of funding.

Applicants may use a portion of the budget for HEFAT (Hostile Environment and First Aid Training) or other security training, if applicable.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Applicants may request up to $80,000.

Term of Contract:

- Project start dates should be a minimum of six months after the submission deadline to ensure any awarded funds are received in time.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants MUST have strong track records as storytellers (journalists, photographers, videographers, cartographers, etc.) and demonstrated publication success.

National Geographic welcomes applications from around the globe and seeks to build a community of explorers that reflects the rich diversity of the world.

Applicants from outside the United States are specifically encouraged to apply.

Please read and verify that you meet National Geographic's Eligibility Requirements before beginning your application:

Organizations can apply for grants, but the person within the organization who will lead the project—not the institution—should be the applicant and will be expected to meet the requirements of the grant.

You may submit a proposal as the project leader for only one project at a time. You must submit a final report and media from any previous grants for which you were the leader before applying to lead a new project.

Students should not submit in their advisor’s name. The individual responsible for carrying out the project should apply and write the application.

Grant awards do not cover funding for scholarships, tuition, training courses, travel to conferences, study abroad programs, school living expenses, journal publication fees, or internships. The National Geographic Society does not provide funding for weapons or ammunition. A small amount of the requested budget can be allocated for lab work or analyses.

October 21, 2020 is the next deadline to submit a proposal for this funding opportunity.
