Grants to New Jersey childcare providers to support and expand the childcare workforce. Applicants must complete required registrations and trainings prior to applying. Funding is intended to promote the retention of current staff and to help recruit new staff. Current part-time and full-time instructional/teaching staff who are assigned to work in the classroom and are responsible for instruction and supervision of children are eligible for $1,000 bonus payments.

Funds must be used to recruit new staff into the child care workforce and to reward and retain current staff. The Phase 1 Retention Grant is for staff currently employed at your program. The Phase 1 Hiring Grant, which will be available in Spring 2022, will be for newly hired staff or staff that did not receive the Phase 1 Retention Grant. 

General Grant Requirements:

  • Staff income $50,000 or less a year
  • Staff must be in teaching or supervision role
  • Staff must comply with Child Care Development Block Grant trainings
  • Staff must complete comprehensive criminal background checks
  • Programs must be in good standing with state and local health and safety regulations
  • Program must be open and operating

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Child care providers (licensed centers and registered family child care) can apply for this grant.

If you are a child care center provider, your program may be eligible for these grants if you are:
- Open and operating a licensed child care center;
- In compliance with federal Child Care Development Block Grant (CCDBG) health and safety requirements (criminal background check and health and safety trainings);
- In good standing with New Jersey’s Licensing, Manual of Requirements; and
- Open and operating at time of application.

Child care center staff are eligible for a $1,000 bonus, if they:
- Make $50,000 or less a year;
- Were newly hired or are a current employee;
- Are responsible for directly working with children (care, supervision or instructing); and
- Are registered in the Workforce Registry through NJCCIS (New Jersey Child Care Information System).

Family child care providers may be eligible, if you are:
- A registered Family Child Care Provider;
- In compliance with federal Child Care Development Block Grant (CCDBG) health and safety requirements (criminal background check and health and safety trainings);
- In good standing with New Jersey’s Registration, Manual of Requirements;
- Make $50,000 or less a year;
- Open and operating at time of application; and
- Have children enrolled.

Pre-Application Information:

Phase 1 Retention Grant Available through January 14, 2022.

- December 2021 retention grant payments are for current staff.
- Spring 2022 hiring grant payments are for new staff.

There are several things you can do to prepare for these grants, by updating your information in the NJCCIS (New Jersey Child Care Information System): https://www.njccis.com/njccis/home.

Payments are scheduled within 30 days of application approval. Providers will receive an email informing them of their grant application status and total award amount. Payments will be made to the provider and they will be responsible for disbursing the full $1,000 bonus grant amount directly to staff.

To be eligible for this grant, you must comply with training requirements set forth by Child Care Development Block Grant Reauthorization (CCDBG). You must complete these trainings, even if you do not accept, or plan to accept, state subsidies. For more information on required trainings, visit the ChildCareNJ.gov Training page at https://www.childcarenj.gov/Providers/Training. It can take up to 14 days for training completion certificates to display on staff records. As long as staff has completed or will complete the training requirements within 30 days of application, you can include those staff names on the grant application.
