Grant Description

Awards to USA, Canada, and International scientists to acknowledge important contributions to the study of skin disease. Eligible use of funds is limited to salaries related to the running and completion of research projects in the field of dermatology. The awards are intended to recognize outstanding scientists according to region.

The LEO Foundation Awards recognize outstanding young researchers and scientists from around the world whose work represents an extraordinary contribution to skin research and has the potential to pave the way for new and improved treatments for skin diseases.

The award was born out of the aim of advancing the understanding and treatment of skin diseases and strengthening the pipeline of excellent dermatology researchers. It recognizes promising young talents and hopefully provides a boost to their future careers.

The award is well aligned with the Foundation’s goal of continually promoting and advancing skin research.

Additional Criteria for Eligibility

Regional awards are given annually to outstanding young scientists within regions Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific.

The applicant should:
- Have his/her primary workplace within the relevant region at the time of being selected as awardee
- Be between 30 and 40 years of age at the time of being selected as awardee. Natural and reasonable career breaks such as paternity/maternity leave, military service or the like may be deducted
- Be able to demonstrate scientific merit in the form of at least 5 peer-reviewed first author or co-first author publications within skin-related research
- Be an active scientist within skin-related research
- Agree to become a ‘LEO Foundation Alumni’ with accompanying obligations, if selected as awardee.

Ineligible

Applicants should not:
- Have commercial or cosmetic/aesthetic research as his/her primary focus.
- Have personal or financial ties to LEO Pharma, including involvement in e.g. sponsored studies or clinical trials at PI level.
- Be an earlier recipient of a LEO Foundation Award.
- Be an earlier recipient of another prize or award (personal or for research) exceeding a value of USD 50,000. Regular research grants are exempt from this requirement.

The Grant must not be applied towards payment of any administration fees, overheads or similar charges imposed by the Host or any third party in excess of 5% of the total Grant sum.

The Grant funds may not be used to cover salaries, fringe benefits, severance payments or any other types of costs or charges in relation to persons who are on parental leave, longer-lasting sick leave, major training programmes or any other absence out of the ordinary.

Deadline for self-nomination - all regions: 25 January 2023 (midnight CET)

In 2023, all three LEO Foundation Award winners will be presented at the International Societies for Investigative Dermatology (ISID) meeting 10-13 May 2023 in Tokyo, Japan.

The Grant will be paid out to the university, hospital, institute or other legal entity at which the Grantee is employed.

Number of Grants

Three awards are made each year, one in each of the regions: Americas, EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) and Asia-Pacific.

Estimated Size of Grant

Each award is worth USD 100,000.

Term of Contract

- Any part of the Grant which has not been duly spent on the Projects within 5 (five) years from the date of the Grant letter shall be returned to the LEO Foundation by the Host.
- The Grantee and the Host shall ensure that any and all data, results and other information generated during the Projects shall be registered and maintained for a period of at least 5 (five) years after finalisation of the Projects.
