Grants of $3,000 to Texas, California, and Florida elementary bilingual teachers in eligible counties for professional development and teaching resources. Funding is intended to support bilingual literacy. Eligible applicants are K-5 Spanish-English teachers in public and charter schools in the following locations:

  • California: the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernadino and Ventura
  • Florida: Miami-Dade County
  • Texas: Dallas County

Read Conmigo is an educator grant program from The Kemper Foundation to support bilingual (Spanish-English) elementary education teachers and Latino students. The grants are dedicated to providing needed tools, resources and supplies for the classroom, and professional development opportunities for teachers.

Grant funding can be used toward:

  • Classroom resources: supplies, books, lesson plans, technology and field trips
  • Professional development: instruction, training, conferences, seminars or materials, including books or curriculum-related references

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

• Applicant must be a licensed, Spanish-English teacher in a bilingual class setting.
• Applicant must be employed by an accredited K-5 public or charter school in one of the following locations:
o California: the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino or Ventura
o Florida: Miami-Dade County
o Texas: Dallas County
• Transitional kindergarten educators will be considered for grants.
• Teachers who are immediate family members of employees of any of the Kemper family of companies are not eligible for the grant.
• At least 50% of an applicant’s teaching time must be dedicated to providing group instruction to students (one-on-one instructional time does not count toward this time requirement).
• An applicant must have at least two years' experience as a K-5 bilingual Spanish-English teacher by the end of the school year during which the application is submitted. (Note: Student and substitute teaching do not count.)
• Administrators (e.g., principals) are not eligible to apply.

Grant funds cannot be used for: general operations; capital projects; endowments; fundraising events or similar activities; religious or political projects; teaching assistants; individuals for personal use; summer projects; nonbilingual program club activities; salaries; facility maintenance; or education research.

Pre-Application Information:

The application deadline for the spring 2023 grant cycle is November 27, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. local time.

The program will run two grant cycles: one in the fall and one in the spring.

Teachers can apply for only one grant per academic school year.
