Foundation Grant Search Tips

Most folks are aware that there are grants from the government. However, some grant seekers may not be aware that there are many foundations that offer grants as well. The process of seeking federal government grants can be daunting. With a foundation grant, (depending on the organization), the barriers are easier to breach. It’s one good reason why organizations should choose to apply for foundation grants.

Another reason to select foundation funding is that foundations typically offer a wide variety of grants. Nonprofits, businesses, and individuals, both nationally and internationally, can apply for foundational grants. In addition, there are no limitations to grant size. However, it’s important to remember that the larger the grant, the more competitive it will be to win approval. It’s well worth the effort, though. In this way, foundations attempt to level the field, giving smaller nonprofits and startups a better chance of being awarded.

Foundation Grants Search Tips

  • Check out local foundations in your area. Some foundations give grants nationwide, but many like to give closer to home where they have a presence in the community. Or, at the very least, they may give priority to those communities. Which, of course, can give you an advantage.
  • Find out where organizations similar to yours have received grants. One way to do this is by using a grant web search database, like GrantWatch which allows you to reverse search foundation grant recipients.
  • If you know the name of a foundation, you can use a 990 search tool, like the one on GrantWatch, to see if they fund similar causes and organizations in your community.
  • Read up on the foundation, so you can identify some causes they want to focus on. You can find information about the past, but sometimes things change in the future and that can give you an idea if they are looking to focus on funding some different types of organizations and causes going forward.
