Payroll Grants are rare, but like precious gems, you can find them, if you know where to mine! If you’re new to grant seeking, you may quickly realize that most funders don’t cover payroll expenses. In fact, wages, salaries, rent, debt, and general operating costs are often listed as ineligible expenses. So, what exactly are payroll grants where can you find them?

A “payroll grant” is a financial award given to a business or nonprofit to give them the capital they need to cover their payroll expenses. These grants are often highly specific, with strict eligibility requirements based on location, industry, or purpose. While payroll grants are hard to come by, they are out there, but where?! Promoting Social Justice

Fellowships to USA individuals recently awarded with PhDs in humanities or humanistic social sciences for projects promoting social justice. Fellows receive funding for professional development. Hosting organization contributes to health insurance and other benefits, the requisite payroll taxes associated with having the fellow on payroll, and other costs.

Quality of Life 

Up to $10,000 to Ohio nonprofits to improve the quality of life of local residents. Funding is for programs for civic and community development, education, health, youth services, and social services. In addition, it also covers things routine operating or payroll expenses.

Business Growth and Expansion

Grants up to $25,000 to Connecticut childcare centers for business growth and expansion. Funding is for activities to increase enrollment at current locations, expand to new locations, and create new revenue streams. Eligible uses of funds include equipment and furniture purchases, construction costs, educational supplies, and payroll to cover the cost of additional staff. 

Respond to Emergencies

Grants to USA nonprofit and for-profit performance venues and promoters to respond to emergencies. Eligible applicants work in the areas of performing arts, comedy, and music. Funding is for recovery from emergencies including natural and man-made disasters, acts of terrorism, and natural hazards. Funding is available for various expenses, including payroll, staff retention, hiring, and employee incentives.

Restaurant Industry for Financial Relief

Grants to Illinois minority-owned for-profit food establishments in eligible locations to provide relief during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The purpose is to provide monetary assistance to restaurants severely impacted by the current health crises. Funding is for working capital including payroll, rent, insurance, utilities, taxes, operations, and contractors.

Humanities Activities and Programs

Up to $10,000 to Oregon nonprofits and Tribes for a range of humanities activities and programs. Priority is for organizations that are based in and led by rural communities and/or organizations led by Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color (BIPOC) communities. Applicants may request an indirect cost rate of up to 15 percent of the total award request. Costs may include but aren’t limited to payroll processing, audit fees, and office equipment.

Impacts of COVID-19

Grants up to $25,000 to California small businesses to address the economic impacts of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) health crisis. Funding is to be used towards business-related expenses, such as rent and lease payments, payroll support, and purchases related to business operations or other expenses.

 Low- and Moderate-Income Residents

Grants to Texas nonprofits for programs and services that benefit residents in eligible locations. Funding provides affordable housing and essential services that improve the quality of life for low-and moderate-income residents. Portions of the funding also may include payroll and/or other administrative expenses.

If you are determined to seek more grants, you might also consider thinking outside the box. You could search for Capital Funding opportunities. In addition, grants are also frequently available for workplace training and workforce development. By locating funding for your programming needs or projects, it will free up your funds to help cover payroll expenses.
