World Alzheimer’s Day: Five Grants for the Cause
September 21 marks World Alzheimer’s Day, a day focused on bringing awareness to the disorder and supporting efforts to treat the disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, an estimated 6.5 million Americans aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in 2022. However, the organization predicts that the number will rise to nearly 13 million by 2050.
What Is Alzheimer’s Disease?
Alzheimer’s Disease is a progressive type of dementia that is caused by damage to neurons. The disease affects one’s memory and worsens over time. As of now, there is no cure. In the early stages of Alzheimer’s, memory loss may be less severe; but by the late stages, individuals are unable to have a conversation, recognize their loved ones, or even react to their environment.
Statistics about the Disease
- The disease makes up 60-80 percent of dementia cases.
- More than 11 million Americans provide unpaid care for people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias.
- Approximately 1 out of 9 seniors are currently in some stage of Alzheimer’s disease.
- Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women.
- 1 in 3 seniors die of Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.
Five Grants to Support Alzheimers
- Grants are available to clinicians and researchers for Alzheimer’s drug research.
- USA institutions and organizations can apply for grants to provide educational activities to patients and caregivers impacted by Alzheimer’s disease.
- Grants and fellowships are offered to researchers for projects that increase the understanding of Alzheimer’s disease.
- Additionally, grants and in-kind support are available to scholars and clinicians for research related to cognitive disease.
- Finally, grants are available to researchers, health professionals, and scientists for projects investigating the cause of Alzheimer’s disease.
