Grant Description
Awards of $5,000 to USA journalists to recognize outstanding commentary or investigative journalism. Eligible categories of work include newspaper, book, broadcast, magazine, and opinion and analysis. Nominees should demonstrate strong storytelling skills, reportorial excellence, and social justice impact. The contest is open to journalists globally, although work must have been intended for and be widely accessible to a U.S. audience.

Since 1950, the Sidney Hillman Foundation has honored journalists who pursue investigative reporting and deep storytelling in service of the common good.

  1. Book (nonfiction)
  2. Newspaper Journalism (story, series or multimedia; print or online)
  3. Magazine Journalism (longform; print or online)
  4. Broadcast Journalism (television, radio or podcast; at least 20 minutes in total package length)
  5. Opinion & Analysis Journalism (commentary and analysis in any medium)

Please note for 2024, the Web category has been eliminated. If you write for a digital outlet, use your best judgement as to whether it fits better in the Newspaper or Magazine category. Please do NOT enter the same work twice in two different categories.

Additional Eligibility Criteria
The contest is open to journalists globally, although work must have been intended for and be widely accessible to a U.S. audience. Stories may be on any topic but entries with U.S impact are prioritized. You may nominate your own work or someone else’s. You may apply on your own, or be entered by your outlet/organization. There is no limit to the number of entries one outlet may make. There is no fee to enter.

Pre-Application Information
The deadline for entry will be January 30, 2024 at 11:59pm EST.

Winners will be announced in April 2024. Hillman Prize winners will be awarded an honorarium and a certificate at the annual ceremony to be held in New York City on Tuesday May 7, 2024.

A note on the categories: If your reporting appeared in a magazine (even if only online), enter in Magazine (e.g New Yorker.com). If you are a broadcast outlet, enter in Broadcast even if your video only appeared online. You do not need to enter the same work twice in two different categories.

You may nominate your own work or someone else’s. You may apply on your own, or be entered by your outlet/organization. There is no limit to the number of entries one outlet may make. There is no fee to enter.

New in 2024, the foundation will administer the SEIU Award for Reporting on Racial and Economic Justice. All Hillman Prize entries will be automatically considered for this award as well.
