Grants to USA, Canada, and International nonprofit organizations for original and innovative projects that advance scholarship in the arts. Funding is intended for the focus areas of exhibitions, academics, conservation, and convening. Although the Foundation funds projects from across the United States and abroad, it is particularly interested in receiving proposals from the target regions. In the U.S., this includes Arizona, Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Internationally, the Foundation is especially excited to support projects that engage with the Art of the Spanish Americas collection.

The Foundation is seeking proposals that will provide promising insights into the fields of art which the Thoma Foundation collects: digital and electronic art, art of the Spanish Americas, Japanese bamboo, and post-war painting and sculpture. The Foundation also welcomes requests pertaining to the arts and culture of the American Southwest.
The projects supported through the General Nonprofit Grants fall within one or more of the following categories:
  • Academic: Research, travel, manuscript development, hiring research assistants, equipment, etc. to support original scholarship related to the collection areas. Academic projects should culminate in a clear final deliverable such as a book manuscript or peer-reviewed article.
  • Exhibitions: As of Spring 2021, the Foundation is excited to learn about exhibitions that are slated to open in 2022 or 2023. Exhibition funding can include development, scholarship, construction, outreach, traveling costs, admissions subsidies, and more. The Thoma Art Foundation also loans pieces from its collections in support of exhibitions. The loan application process is separate from the grant platform; please see the collections site and read the FAQ page to learn more about artwork loans.
  • Conservation: Support for innovative conservation programs connected to the collecting areas. Proposals should go beyond standard best practices to include new technologies, techniques, institutional collaborations, or interdisciplinary approaches.
  • Convening: To encourage scholarly debate and dialogue, the Foundation funds academic conferences and workshops that will significantly advance the fields of art scholarship related to the collections. The Foundation urges applicants to familiarize themselves with industry standards for honoraria and per diems in advance of creating a convening budget.
