Grants to USA Historically Black Colleges and Universities to digitally archive historic photographs. Funding is intended to digitize and document photographs from the institution's collection. The goal of the program is to increase knowledge of previously unknown history as well as provide a revenue stream for the school. The program was created to preserve the important, deeply resonant visual history of HBCUs. Grant recipients will have their photographic archives digitized and bring to market previously unseen historical imagery—while retaining the copyright for the content.

Project Goals:

  • Empower the institutions with access to content which will energize their messaging with Alumni, students, and donors.
  • Provide a new revenue source for HBCUs through licensing on the Getty Images website - HBCUs maintain full copyright ownership.
  • Support the educational future of students through a scholarship fund focused on furthering the education of HBCU students.
  • Support HBCU students interested in being a part of the digitization process and learnings about their school.
  • Support the awareness around Black culture and narratives, inspiring storytellers to tell previously untold stories.

Award Details:

  • The grant will fund the digitization of up to 100,000 archival photos per Grant recipient
  • Getty Images will manage the digitization process, to take place onsite at the HBCU grant recipient's location.
  • The HBCU will provide guidance throughout the digitization process.
  • Getty Images will provide funding and mentoring to support HBCU students interested in being a part of the digitization process and learnings about their school.
  • The HBCU grant recipients will retain all copyrights to photos digitized, as well as have the right to use the photos digitized for any use.
  • In addition to being available to license on the Getty Images site, the HBCU Grant Recipient’s digitized library will also be made available free of charge for non‑commercial use in support of learning about and reflecting on Black history for Black storytellers and not‑for profits as part of the Getty Images Black History & Culture Collection, launching later in 2021.
